## How to Calculate APS Score

Calculating an Admission Point Score (APS) is crucial for university or college admission.

This guide is detailed, focusing on simplicity and clarity for easy understanding.

Understand the Basics:

• APS stands for Admission Point Score, which is used by South African universities and colleges to determine your eligibility for admission.
• It is calculated based on your Matriculation (Matric) marks in South Africa.
• Your Matric results are given as percentages for each subject.

Assign Point Scores:

Each Matric subject mark is assigned a point score on a scale from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

Here’s the point allocation:

A symbol (80 – 100%) = 7
B symbol (70 – 79%) = 6
C symbol (60 – 69%) = 5
D symbol (50 – 59%) = 4
E symbol (40 – 49%) = 3
F symbol (30 – 39%) = 2
G symbol (0 – 29%) = 1

• Determine which of your Matric subjects are your best six (Life Orientation is excluded).
• These will be the subjects used to calculate your APS.

Assign Point Scores to Your Subjects:

• For each of your best six subjects, find the corresponding point score based on the percentage you received.

Check University Requirements:

• Different universities and programs may have specific APS requirements for admission.
• Make sure your APS meets or exceeds the minimum requirement for the course you want to apply to.

Example Calculation:

Let’s say your six best subjects are:

Mathematics (65% = APS 5)
English Home Language (68% = APS 5)
|Afrikaans First Additional Language (59% = APS 4)
Life Sciences (81% = APS 7), Physical Sciences (71% = APS 6)
Business Studies (68% = APS 5)

Calculate your total APS by adding the point scores (5 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 6 + 5), which equals 32.

In this example, your APS is 32.

Based on your APS, you can determine which level of study you qualify for:

Bachelor’s Degree pass – minimum APS 23
Diploma pass – minimum APS 19
Higher Certificate pass – minimum APS 15
NSC pass – minimum APS 14

Keep in Mind:

• While APS is essential, other factors may influence your admission, such as the specific requirements of the institution and the course you apply for.
• Some universities may require additional entrance exams or criteria.

Following these steps will help you calculate your APS score and use it as a guide to plan your educational path in South Africa.

Remember that APS is just one part of the admission process, so make sure to meet all other requirements set by your desired institution.
